About RM
Kim Nam-joon, known professionally as RM, is the leader and main rapper of BTS. Born on September 12, 1994, in Ilsan, Goyang, South Korea, he showed exceptional academic promise from a young age, scoring in the top 1% nationally on standardized tests. His passion for hip-hop, sparked by Epik High's music, led him to pursue rap as a teenager, performing in the underground scene under the name "Runch Randa."
RM was the first member recruited by Big Hit Entertainment's Bang Si-hyuk, who discovered him through the underground rap community. As the group's leader, he has been the primary spokesperson and a key creative force, contributing to songwriting and production across BTS's entire discography. He is credited on over 250 songs registered with the Korea Music Copyright Association.
Beyond music, RM has become a prominent cultural figure. He delivered speeches at the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, 2020, and 2021, addressing youth empowerment and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. His eloquence in English and thoughtful commentary on social issues have earned him respect beyond the K-pop sphere.
As a solo artist, RM released his debut studio album Indigo in December 2022, a deeply personal project featuring collaborations with Erykah Badu, Anderson .Paak, and Youjeen. He followed with Right Place, Wrong Person in May 2024. After completing his military service in June 2025, he rejoined BTS activities.
